Where to find us

Parking

Accessibility: Disabled bays are available at the top of the main car park (level access to main entrance) and also closer to the Centre if you follow the road around to the left (access via a short flight of steps or sloping path).

A parking charge of £2 applies 7 days a week from 08:00 - 17:00 and our parking meters accept both cash and card payments. We have introduced a parking fee to help the charity offset the cost of caring for and protecting its natural landscape within the South Downs National Park

Motorcycles can park free of charge.

Free parking for Annual Pass holders - please clearly display your permit on your dashboard. If you have forgotten your permit, you will be issued with a dated paper ticket for that day only.

Please do not park in the Holiday Inn car park - this parking is reserved for Holiday Inn customers only. Thank you.

Park and Ride - available on selected days only

This service will be running on Thursday 16 August.

On selected days over the holiday period (normally wet weather days) Winchester Science Centre will run a park and ride service from St Catherine’s Park & Ride (SO23 9NP, Zone 7).

Please note: this service will be advertised on our website and social media channels by 5pm the day before if it is due to run. Please check the website prior to your visit and if this service is running, proceed directly to the park and ride where a free bus will be provided to take you to and from Winchester Science Centre.

We recommend to adding approximately 20 minutes to your proposed arrival time at Winchester Science Centre to allow for the journey. The first bus will leave at 10am with the last bus leaving the Centre at 5:15pm. (If you are attending an evening event a later bus will be provided.)

How to Park

Parking charges at the park and ride are between £1.50 and £3.00 depending on the day (it's free on Sundays) and your time of arrival. Please purchase a ticket in the usual way. You will be issued with a two part ticket. Put one part in the window of your car and retain the other portion. When you reach Winchester Science Centre, present your ticket and we will refund the cost of parking. If you pay using your phone please show this to us.

Look out for the dedicated Winchester Science Centre buses. Do not board the green single-deckers which will take you into Winchester.

By bicycle

There is a straight (if hilly) road from Winchester city centre all the way to Winchester Science Centre. If you are good with hills (there is one very steep section coming onto Alresford Road from the city) then the journey should take you around 30 minutes.

Please be aware this is a single-carriageway national speed limit road with hidden dips.

On foot

The walk from Winchester city centre takes around 45 minutes (60 minutes from the railway station). From the bottom of Winchester it is a straightforward walk - from King Alfred's statue walk away from the high street, over the bridge, then follow Alresford Road up the curvy (and very steep) hill, then continue in a straight line to the Science Centre - find us to your right just before the big roundabout. Be aware that this road is mostly unlit.

There is an option to divert from the road to walk partly through a lovely butterfly reserve: turn into the field just after the Masonic lodge, opposite St Swithun's school. Walk parallel to the main road, on the well-made path up the hill. Continue straight along the back of the cemetary. Continue straight down a more overgrown and leafy path, then turn left through a kissing gate to walk along the back of the Science Centre. Follow this path around the planetarium to access the entrance. The later part of this walk may be overgrown and deeply rutted.

Taxis

Available from the front of Winchester railway station; expect to pay about £8 one way. Also available from the front of the Guildhall and Tourist Information Centre. Call Wessex Cars 01962 877749/866208 or Wintax 01962 878727/878737. Both firms have taxis adapted for wheelchairs.
