New for 2020
From Saturday 17 October, find out how far your curiosity will take you as you embark on an exhilarating adventure around our brand new visitor experience!
Feel your senses come alive as you explore the sights and sounds of our exciting new interactive exhibition, all themed around sound, hearing and vibration, and be wowed by the huge explosive live demos in Science LIVE! Head outside to get up close to nature with hands-on challenges in the BIO:SPACE experimentation zone, relax with a hot drink or mouth-wateringly tasty treat from the refreshed café and continue your STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) journey at home with a souvenir from the remodelled shop. And if it all gets a bit too much, take a break in the Recombobulation Room – a quiet place designed for people who need time away from the hustle and bustle of the Centre.
And don’t miss out on all the other exciting activities you can experience on your day out, from out-of-this world interactive exhibits in Explorer:Space to spectacular shows in the UK’s largest standalone planetarium to free live science shows led by our incredible team of Inspirers. Check out our Things To Do page for more information.
Have you heard that our new exhibition sounds amazing! Come on an exciting adventure of discovery through the art, physics and biology of sound, hearing and vibration, where inspirational and fun interactive exhibits are waiting to bring it all to life.
Put yourself in the action by venturing into our enormous 10m long guitar to feel the vibrations as your friends and family pluck the strings, experience the wonder of acoustics inside the sonic rocket and climb inside our giant ear to explore its inner workings. Laugh and learn together by making sounds in the huge echo tubes, discover more about decibels, rhythm and frequency and try your hand at British Sign Language. You can even join the rescue crew to save Humphrey the Humpback Whale and meet the experts in our bringing Research to Life zone, plus so much more!
For the very first time we want you to join us outside to let nature inspire you. Our brand new inside/outside nature-based experimentation zone will encourage children, families and friends to get creative and have a go at challenges themed around our stunning location in the South Downs National Park. Get involved with activities designed around birds, bugs and bees as well as plants and the ecology of the area.
Please note that we will be going outside whatever the weather so make sure you dress for all eventualities!
Get set for some explosive live science demos as our team bring the action to the exhibition floor! There’ll be fire, ice, explosions and much more, all on a massive scale and taking place at regular intervals throughout the day so you won’t miss a thing.
We know that no two visitors are the same. Everyone has different needs when they visit us, from the exhibits they enjoy and the interactions they experience to the information they receive and the facilities they use. We have therefore installed a Recombobulation Room as a sanctuary for those with sensory sensitivities to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Centre.
As part of our mission to make STEM accessible to everyone, we have achieved a long-held desire to improve the noisy and sometimes overwhelming environment created by our unique pyramid-shaped building by installing state-of-the-art acoustic solutions.
Working with Peter Rogers from Winchester-based acoustics consultancy Sustainable Acoustics, we identified ‘noise hot-spots’ and with the help of Ecophon, global developers and manufacturers of acoustic solutions, we have installed a mixture of acoustic treatments, from a calming wave-like installation above the welcome area to fun pink patchwork squares over the café to an exclusively designed acoustic tree with leaves shaped like those of the English Oak.
Each set of acoustic solutions has been designed to solve sound problems, improve ambient noise and provide an aesthetically pleasing environment for visitors. Find out more during your visit.
Refreshed Welcome Area, Café and Shop
Frequent visitors will hardly recognise the Centre when they arrive as we’ve completely transformed the entire top floor. As well as the new exhibition and experimentation zone we’ve refreshed our welcome area, café and shop.
