WSC at Farnborough International Airshow

Winchester Science Centre is delighted to announce that we will be attending Farnborough International Airshow as a confirmed public engagement partner this July.

The Farnborough International Airshow is back for 2018 and set to deliver another truly world class flying display

Held at the historical Farnborough International Airport, the birthplace of British aviation, the show features a jam-packed display both on the ground and in the air. Aerobatic teams, Wingwalkers, fast jets, military giants, civil airliners and historic aircraft will all grace the skies over Farnborough.

Whilst the world-famous flying display delivers 5 hours of dramatic action in the skies, the fun doesn’t stop in the air! On offer will be a wealth of entertainment, education and interaction, including flight simulators! Meet the past, present and future of aviation with a range of both historic and modern aircraft to explore, as well as a host of other exciting attractions.

WSC Activities

Our fantastic team will be delivering a wide variety of exciting activities including:

o   Rocket buggy challenge: Visitors will be able to construct and test bottle-powered buggies down our track, discovering the challenges and delight in investigating high-speed land vehicles.

o   Paper plane challenge: Visitors will craft their own paper planes and compete to make the furthest flying plane and even experiment with the difference between assisted launch and powered flight.

o   Destination Space mini-shows: On the hour and half hour there will be mini ‘Destination Space’ live science demonstrations on stage, presenters will explore the role of satellites, exploring how we launch them and what we do with them when they are up there – all through exciting live demonstrations

o   Busking: WSC staff and volunteers will be busking through a variety of fundamental scientific concepts, from the states of matter with solid carbon dioxide to how we can use light to understand our universe

You can also take a trip into space with our incredible mobile planetarium, where you can enjoy an immersive and visually stunning flight into space, via high-quality 360 degree film projection onto the 6m dome. Visitors can also find out about the many routes to a career in STEM and how both the STEM Ambassador programme and Crest Awards can help you on your journey.
