Van de Graaf
Van de Graaf
Are you ready for a hands-on hair-raising experience?
In 2022 we’re celebrating 20 years of wow moments at the Science Centre. Take a trip down memory lane with us and enjoy some of our best show themes and demos from the past 20 years – all with a retro 2002 twist. This summer it's electricity!
Have you ever heard of a Van de Graaf? It's an electrostatic generator. Originally developed as a particle accelerator for physics research, we'll be using one to bring physics to life this summer! Join us in Science Live every day for an interactive hair-raising experience. Are you brave enough to have a go at sparking some static electricity? Don't worry, our Inspirers will be on hand to help you out.
Some things to know before using the Van de Graaf:
- Make sure you remove any metal, including jewellery. If you're not sure about an item, please check with our Inspirer before taking part.
- All electronic devices including mobile phones, tablets, cameras, etc, must be kept behind the blue safety line. If you want to take photos, the Inspirer will tell you the best place to stand.
- Everyone not taking part should stand at least 2m away.
- If you are pregnant, have a history of seizures, are under four, have a heart condition, or have a pacemaker, cochlear implant or any other medical equipment fitted, you cannot use the Van de Graaf.
