MAYDAY! Emergency Services Weekend

MayDay! We have an emergency! Join us for a hands-on experience and learn about our incredible emergency services and the amazing work they do. This event is delivered in partnership with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) and Lifelab, Southampton.

Activities

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, our staff will be working with the heroes at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance to deliver medical-themed activities throughout the Science Centre, and Lifelab will be running a challenge in the Invention Studio on Sunday. Visitors can drop in to these special activities at no extra cost, but please note that some activities will be ticketed to reserve a place - these are free tickets, available to reserve with General Admission. Please note tickets for the extra activities include an accompanying adult and so a separate ticket for adults does not need to be purchased for the free events.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance activities:

• Mission Planning Project (Saturday & Sunday)
Helimed 56 is the radio call sign for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. When they hear this call at the Ambulance Service Emergency Operations Centre, they know it's time to get going on a mission. You will be tasked with planning your mission to get airborne and on your way to the incident using pilots maps and tools in teams. Designed as part of the HIOWAA LifeLines project, this is a 30 minute activity taken from our downloadable STEM project and can be carried out in groups of 4. This workshop is aimed at children aged 8 years old and over, and will take place in the Space Marquee. You will be able to reserve free tickets for this activity.

• Operation (Saturday - Monday)
Buddy's not feeling so well and has an appointment for surgery. This giant game of Operation is a game of physical skill that tests players' hand-eye coordination and motor skills. Be the doctor, and take turns using the tweezers to carefully remove 11 easy-grab ailments from Buddy's body - or get the buzzer!

• Ask The Expert (Saturday & Sunday)
Meet the expert doctors, nurses, paramedics, pilots and mission planners who look after our communities everyday. An excellent opportunity to pose your questions and find out what you need to do to start a career in the emergency services and how you can help!

• Teddy CPR (Saturday - Monday)
Bring along a teddy and learn an important, life-saving skill. CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It's a life-saving medical procedure which is given to someone who is in cardiac arrest. It helps to pump blood around the person's body when their heart can't. This workshop is aimed at ages 4 - 11 years old and will take place in the Space Marquee. You will be able to reserve free tickets for this activity.

Visitors can drop in to these special activities at no extra cost, but please note that some activities will be ticketed to reserve a place - these are free tickets, available to reserve with General Admission.

As well as all this, there will be an opportunity to climb into the cockpit of the helicopter pod with an aviation expert and even take your picture with a HIOWAA mascot

Early Lifelab Invention Studio takeover - Sunday 6 May:

Sunday will see Lifelab, a University of Southampton initiative raising awareness of young people's health, take over our fantastic Invention Studio. They will be running an exciting 'Save the Gingerbread Man' challenge for everyone to get involved in. The Gingerbread Man has escaped everyone chasing him, but he’s come to a wide river. Can you build a boat to help him cross?

You will be able to reserve free tickets for this activity.
