Winchester Science Centre seeks new Trustee with legal expertise
This is a rare opportunity within the region for a legal professional to make a valued contribution to a dynamic and innovative educational charity, with a strategic vision of sparking curiosity and a mission to build science capital for all.
This well-established charity, which runs Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium and frequent outreach activities inspires over 190,000 people each year but it, is set to do more.
In 2019 the charity will embark on an exciting three-year physical and cultural transformation. Determined to improve access to science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), especially for young people with disabilities and from other disadvantaged backgrounds, the organisation is challenging STEM stereotypes, sparking curiosity and inspiring the next generation of brilliant scientists. Development will include rethinking traditional exhibition design and the delivery of STEM activities and growing existing partnerships with schools, universities, STEM professionals and local communities.
The first major milestone in this development is the total upgrade of the planetarium in June 2019. WSC has secured over £800,000 for its development plan from Enterprise M3 LEP, Hampshire County Council, Winchester City Council, University of Southampton and other funding bodies. At such a pivotal time for the charity, and to achieve its ambitions, WSC is seeking an enthusiastic and committed individual with a legal background to join the existing Board of Trustees.
WSC is governed by a Board of up to 12 trustees who hold collective responsibility for the charity’s strategic direction and governance. The new member will play a vital role in providing legal advice and supporting the many other areas of work, including the securing of a sustainable funding base, promotion of the Science Centre, and ongoing development the organisation. They will help to drive quality, growth and strengthen the current Board of Trustees.
This is a rare opportunity to make a difference within a passionate, committed and continuously evolving organisation. Ben Ward, CEO of Winchester Science Centre says: “We would welcome an application from anyone who shares our charity’s vision to spark curiosity, who can help to lead us through our development and increase our capacity to inspire future generations into STEM.”
