Winchester Science Centre announces new Chair of Trustees
Dr Toby King, a Chartered Engineer, has been appointed as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees at Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium.
Toby, from Fareham, has a first degree and PhD in Medical Engineering from the University of Cambridge and is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He has spent his career working in innovative hi-tech companies predominantly in the medical devices and renewable energy sectors.
Toby is a strong advocate of working to inspire young people into careers within STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), a key strategic area for the Science Centre which is also the regional hub for STEM Now – an organisation which manages the Central South STEM Ambassador Hub for Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, and the British Science Association CREST Awards across 14 counties. He is Deputy Chairman of Engineering UK, the national charity that promotes engineering to young people, helping to close the UK’s huge STEM skills gap.
“STEM learning is so important and it opens so many doors. I’m passionate about getting young people excited about understanding the world they live in. I’m always promoting the benefits of a career in science and engineering to all who will listen, whether it be the senior management of AstraZeneca or the cubs and scouts in Hampshire,” said Toby.
“Winchester Science Centre is already one of the most important science centres in the UK and yet there’s still so much potential for growth and impact locally and regionally. For me it’s a tremendous opportunity and I can’t wait to get stuck in!”
After three years of being Chair and a long history of supporting the Centre, Terry Marsh leaves the Board of Trustees. “Winchester Science Centre has steadily progressed to impressive national importance over the past few years, and I move on knowing that it will continue to broaden its reach and develop its offer to spark the curiosity of visitors of all ages,” commented Terry. “I’m very proud of all that we have achieved and it’s a truly great team of talented professionals led by Ben, that will make it all happen.”
Ben Ward, CEO of Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium, added: “Huge thank you to Terry for her tireless support as Chair of Trustees and her dedication to the Science Centre over the past 10 years. We’ve evolved and flourished over this time and there’s many new and exciting initiatives ahead.
“I’m thrilled that Toby has joined Winchester Science Centre as our new Chair of Trustees. His passion and enthusiasm for the Centre and all it wants to achieve really shows through and I’m looking forward to working with him to realise our ambitions.”
