Explorer:Space – the UK’s ultimate space adventure opens for summer
Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium is inviting families to embark on a mission to tour the galaxy onboard Explorer:Space, a brand new 600m2 interactive space zone that launches to the public on 20 July.
Explorer:Space is an immersive space experience that will take families on an epic adventure through the universe. This new dramatic staff-led zone includes amazing hands-on exhibits, covering everything from meteorites to stardust, robots to coding and atmospheric pressure to human space flight.
“Explorer:Space is permanent new addition for the Science Centre, designed to wow families and ignite their curiosity in space,” said Ben Ward, CEO of Winchester Science Centre. “We’ve never had an exhibition like this before – the impressive set takes up the entire ground floor of the Science Centre and represents the biggest investment we’ve made since the opening of our planetarium in 2008.”
Explorer:Space has been created by world-class exhibition designers, Wild Creations, famed for constructing huge displays for a range of high-profile events and movie launches, including the recent release of Ghostbusters.
“Explorer:Space is a major development for Winchester Science Centre that will attract families from far and wide. It’s the ultimate day out for budding young astronauts and space engineers! We look forward to launching families into space this summer and delivering a truly unforgettable experience,” added Ben.
To complement the new zone, throughout the summer holidays (20 July-3 September), the Science Centre’s Curiosity Team will be delivering space-themed activities and a brand new live science show, Destination Space, where audiences will explore the story and science of satellites, complete with fiery demonstrations and rocket launches.
Furthermore, there is a fantastic programme of 360° fulldome planetarium shows scheduled for the summer, including the new film narrated by Sean Bean – Faster than Light. Visitors can also enjoy the sunny weather in the outdoor picnic and play area, which has direct access to the Magdalen Hill Down Butterfly Conservation reserve, offering amazing views of the South Downs National Park.
Explorer:Space and the summer holiday space themed-activities are included in General Admission. From 16 July, Winchester Science Centre will introduce a new pricing structure providing a 25% discount for booking online at least three days in advance and 10% discount for booking the day before your visit. Planetarium show tickets must be purchased in addition to General Admission.
The Destination Space live shows will run daily at 11am, 12 noon, 1pm and 2pm inside the Space Marquee – reserve free tickets online in advance when buying General Admission. To find out more and book tickets see our what's on page.
