Planning your day

Some visitors spend a whole day at the Science Centre but most probably spend about half a day. You can stay for an hour or plan to spend an entire day with us, whatever works for you. We would recommend that you leave enough time to explore each of our zones though:

Invention Studio: As soon as you walk onto the exhibition area you will see our Invention Studio. This is a space dedicated to tinkering, trying things out and just having a go. There will be an activity run by our Curiosity Team but if you want to try something else you’re welcome to be creative.

Hands-on exhibits: There are two floors of exciting hands-on exhibits dedicated to all things STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Go on a journey through our Colon Café, test your reaction times in the Science of Sport zone and find out how to bend light; these are just some of the things you will be able to do in this area.

Explorer:Space: Our brand new, immersive zone taking pride of place on the lower floor. Go on an epic journey through the Solar System to learn about space discovered, atmospheric pressure and the first moon landing mission.

Planetarium: The planetarium cinema presents an unforgettable and incredible experience. The 360° domed screen completely surrounds the audience, placing everyone right in the action. We offer full dome screenings of high-quality digital films, covering a wide variety of fascinating topics. There are also live presenter-led shows that explore different aspects of the universe, from the planets to the stars.

The surrounding area: The Science Centre is situated in the South Downs National Park and enjoys great views across the rolling countryside. An outdoor area, with trim trail and water play, surrounded by picnic tables provides a great space for children to play. For the more adventurous, we encourage you to explore the neighbouring Butterfly Conservation Reserve, Magdalen Hill Down. A free spotters trail is available from the Science Centre outlining short walks and points of interest. Visiting on a sunny day is a great way to enjoy the best of indoors and out.

What to expect

A welcoming centre with fun hands-on activities suitable for the whole family. Our team are always on hand to help but won’t put any pressure on you to try anything you don’t want to. If you need any help just ask one of the team – you can spot them as they’ll be wearing a Science Centre uniform.

The exhibits are suitable for all ages – have a go, see what happens and try and work out why. There’s a soft play area for younger children and toddlers.

Dress Code

There isn’t one! You can wear whatever you’re comfortable in. Wear your school uniform, dress like a superhero, wear a lab coat – it’s entirely up to you! We’d recommend comfortable shoes though.

Associated Costs

Your visit with the golden ticket is completely free – it covers parking, entry and one planetarium show.

If you wish to buy lunch in our on-site café or purchase something from our gift shop you are welcome to but there is no obligation to do so.

You can buy lunch in our on-site café, which has a wide variety of hot and cold food and drinks, or bring your own packed lunch. Those with packed lunches are welcome to eat in our indoor picnic area downstairs or enjoy our picnic benches outside with views of the South Downs National Park.

Do I need to be scientist?
